Surprise win for Zoumir in the UAE Arabian Derby!

Zoumir created history by becoming the first horse trained outside UAE to win the Arabian Derby (Prestigue). The four-year-old colt, trained by Julian Smart for The Royal Cavalry of Oman, made almost all under Tadhg O’Shea to win the race run over 2,200 m turf at Abu Dhabi on Sunday 24 February, 2008.

The Dormane colt who was having his second start of the season in the UAE, has finished a creditable 4th in a conditions event over a mile two weeks ago. He seemed to have benefited a lot from that run when he shot to the head of affairs after just 400m and kept on gamely when being strongly challenged by the locally trained Bareg to prevail by a nose. Ms Shujaa was four and a half lengths back in third.

Julian Smart who now trains for The Royal Cavalry of Oman was delighted to be back to Abu Dhabi where he had been form many years before being retained by his new employers. He was quoted as saying: I had many happy years here in Abu Dhabi and it is great to come back and win the UAE Arabian Derby. The horse ran well here a fortnight ago and the step up in trip has definitely helped.

Tadhg O’Shea was also on top of the Eric Lemartinel trained Wadya to win a handicap over the same distance.

Renowned English trainer Gill Duffield was flying high that evening entering the winner's circuit twice. AF Izdihar (Dormane x Azihade by Djourman) under Ted Durcan made it three in row by winning the second race, a handicap over 2200m. Half an hour later Richard Hills completed the double for her onboard Shohrah by in another handicap over 1400m.

Lisa Jones who scored a rare double at the same venue last week, shined again when she produced the Musabah Al Muhairi trained to take the final race for maidens over a mile. This five-year-old gelding was making his UAE debut, quickly recovered from his slow start and kept on well to hit the front 100m from the wire to win going away.

Earlier in the day, the Tony Manuel’s Mondial Ghantoot under John Egan took the opening event over 11 furlongs securing his second win of the year.
