Jockey Development Programme
Candidate Profiles

In 2009 ARO introduced a new initiative to aid young and inexperienced jockeys in gaining the race-riding experience required to progress into becoming a safe and successful professional jockey. Those who applied for a place on the programme were invited to attend an assessment day at the British Racing School, where top instructor Richard Perham put them through a series of exercises in order to establish whether they were suitable candidates. A total of 5 young jockeys were offered places with ARO trainers for the 2009 season, and were placed with host trainers in their local area. This year's candidates were Jack Sherwood, David Prichard, Adam Brook, Chris Dennington and Sam Clarke.

Jack Sherwood & David Prichard are profiled below.

Jack Sherwood
Jack had a successful career in Pony Racing before joining ARO in 2008 to ride a thoroughbred, Burnley, trained by his mother. On joining the programme, he was placed with trainer Adam Newey and went on to ride 8 wins and 12 places from 39 rides. He also rode for a number of other trainers including Gill Duffield and Bill Smith, donning the famous Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum colours on a several occasions (i
ncluding below after winning on Ebraam at Hereford).

Jack was the leading Novice Rider and finished fourth in the Jockeys' Championship. He commented of the programme, "I had a great time this year Arab racing, it was one of the best learning experiences I could have had!"

David Prichard
David was discovered by trainer Delyth Thomas in their home country of Wales who recommended ARO racing to him. David had already shown considerable promise in Point-to-Point racing and went on to ride his second winner under rules and his first flat winner at Bath on the 18th May, earning himself a nomination for the AtTheRaces Ride Of The Week. Whilst based with Delyth Thomas, David rode 2 wins and 8 places from 22 rides, and finished fourteenth in the Jockeys' Championship.
